Publishing portfolio - Book proposal

A multi-part portfolio project created for Michael Greer's Spring 2014 Publishing Inside/Out course.

The goal of this part of the project was to develop an in-depth "pitch" to a publishing company that produces/markets books fitting our chosen topics.

This sample highlights:

  • Proposal writing for a book to an established publisher, including details on content, potential audiences, and comparisons to products with similar writing.

Publishing portfolio - ToC / Chapter outline

The goal of this part of the project was to draft a hypothetical table of contents, as well as a chapter outline, based on the content described in the proposal.

This sample highlights:

  • Organizational planning for overall content of a book (including main chapters and appendices).
  • Outlining of an individual chapter (including topics and subtopics).

Publishing portfolio - Development and Design

The goal of this part of the project was to document the physical- and design-oriented plans for the published versions of our book ideas.

This sample highlights:

  • Planning and justification for physical properties (such as book length and page size), as well as design elements (such as graphics and fonts).
  • Mockup of proposed cover art.

Publishing portfolio - Book marketing / E-book memo

The goal of this part of the project was to create a detailed outline of how our books should be marketed (and promoted) in their published forms. The additional memorandum was assigned for graduates to research and recommend a secondary digital platform.

This sample highlights:

  • Marketing outline (including considerations of social media and contact channels) based on understanding of audience and content.
  • Memo writing for additional distribution planning.

Publishing portfolio - Reflective essay

The goal of this part of the project was to draft a reflective essay summarizing our thoughts and feelings with the publishing process, as well as positive and negative experiences developing our proposed books.

This sample highlights:

  • Reflective writing/summarization of longform, multifaceted project.
