Design memo

Theater brochure

A project created for Karen Kuralt's Fall 2014 Document Design course using MS Publisher (converted to PDF for this portfolio).

The goal of the project was to create a brochure-type document to generate interest in a new business (a fictional movie theater), and was meant to both inform and attract readers who would want to potential customers.

This project highlights:

  • Uses of thematically/aesthetically appropriate colors, images, and stylized text.
  • Considerations of spacing, grouping, and overarching page layout to accommodate the brochure format.
  • Writing for appeal and attraction (information related to theater benefits emphasized for audience).

Design memo

3DS manual

A project created for Karen Kuralt's Fall 2014 Document Design course using MS Word (converted to PDF for this portfolio).

The goal of the project was to create an illustrated manual detailing the necessary steps to turn on, use, and and turn off the Nintendo 3DS gaming system, using as simple directions as possible for a general audience.

This project highlights:

  • Instructional writing (including steps, descriptions, and troubleshooting).
  • Adaptation of language and syntax to increase understandability (and expedite use of product).
  • Use of illustrations (including text-wrapping integration).

Reflection

Personal narrative

A project created for Londie Martin's Spring 2015 Digital Narrative course using the online presentation software Prezi.

The goal of this project was to develop a nonlinear visual presentation based on a personal narrative (in my case, a narrative based on my interests in cinema), using a multimodal combination of text, images, audio, and video.

This project highlights:

  • Nonlinear composition and organization (i.e., Prezi allows for an open-ended, heavily customizable orientation beyond left-to-right).
  • Consideration of spatial movement and grouping (i.e., content in Prezi can be visually panned, zoomed in and out, and layered together).
  • Uses of multimedia (including embedded audio and videos).

Website (HTML / CSS)

A project created for Londie Martin's Fall 2015 Writing for the Web course using the HTML and CSS coding

The goal of this project was to create a simple website (with at least 3 pages excluding the homepage) with HTML/CSS programming. Each page was expected to feature uses of multimedia and external/internal linking (I chose the option to adapt a narrative analysis paper I wrote in 2014 for my site content).

This project highlights:

  • Basic practices in coding with HTML and CSS (some issues with object resizing still viewable).
  • Adaptation of a written work into a multimodal online format.
  • Uses of multimedia (including images and embedded videos).
